Kelsey and her classmates didn’t know why they made all these snowflakes that were requested by the Connecticut PTA at their 4th grade class Christmas party, but they did make beautiful ones that I placed in the mail and shipped for them to use in decorating their new school and welcoming their students back to a winter wonderland. I kept this tragedy from Kelsey’s eyes and ears, but after some thought, did let her know that something bad did happen and that people were hurt. I never want her to feel unsafe in her own school and don’t feel that 9 year old kids have the ability to cope with such tragedy. However, they made lots of snowflakes and hopefully made some children smile on their first day back after a terrible tragedy in their former school.
On December 14, 2012, Adam Lanza, 20, fatally shot twenty children and six adult staff members in a mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the village of Sandy Hook in Newtown, Connecticut.[5][6] Before driving to the school, Lanza had shot and killed his mother Nancy at their Newtown home.[8][10][11] As first responders arrived, he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.
The incident is the second deadliest mass shooting by a single person in American history, after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre. It is the second deadliest mass murder at an American elementary school, after the 1927 Bath School bombings in Michigan. However, it is the most deadly school shooting in any public school in the United States.[12][13]
The shootings prompted renewed debate about gun control in the United States, and a proposal for new legislation banning the sale and manufacture of certain types of semi-automatic firearms and magazines with more than ten rounds of ammunition.[14]
